Getting your web content in the car!

Posted by Dash Navigation on October, 19 in Industry Issues, Search

This morning Rob Currie and I demonstrated an open content platform that will allow consumers to get the content they want into the car. We showed support for GeoRSS and KML, which allows Dash users to bring all the great web map mashups into the car. We also showed API level integration with two great services, Upcoming.org and Zillow. Upcoming.org (a Yahoo! property) is a great community driven event site which allows people to find events on the web. With the Dash device you will be able to find great events right from the car! Imagine driving up to San Francisco and you are planning to take the kids to Golden Gate Park, but it starts raining. Don’t worry, just hit that Upcoming.org button and get events in San Francisco to take the family to.

Zillow.com is a great real estate site that provides really rich information, and what we demonstrated today was the ability to access Zillow right from your car (Note: We built this using Zillow’s open development API). Imagine driving into a new neighborhood and wondering what home prices are around you, well just hit the Zillow button and you will get not only Zestimates (Zillow’s estimate of a home’s value) along with information like number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, square footage, last sale date, last sale price, etc.

Today’s demonstrations are just the tip of the iceberg. We are excited about all the great ideas that will come from outside of Dash, so if you support Geo-standard formats like GeoRSS / KML, you are already set to work with Dash. If you have a service that can have rich API level integration, please be sure to contact us to talk about the opportunities to work together.

Will you have it so the dash can interface directly with my car computer. Also, will I be able to send and recieve messages from other devices on the internet. Also, can my dash dowload a movie and I can view it later. Can I use my dash to locate where my car is and where it has been driven. Can I order food from my dash when I see a restaurant on the screen.. I have lots of info… Just wondering… If I am connected to the internet and this a computer what limits me from doing other web stuff

Can I integrate a camera with my dash - take a pic or insert a sim card and send some info with my dash to another internet device… Does my dash have a place to store stuff for later retrieval.. Are you going to add a slot so we can later expand the dash like the treo has and later we can purchase devices to extend the dash…

Also.. could you make a feature for my wife so she can press a panic button and send the police to her exact location for the police in case of an accident.

I would like a lot of other neat features added… but I would love for it to be able to store information… Also,,, you need someway to communicate with it from external devices… like bluetooth… so I could say send to phone and it would connect to my phone… or if my car had bluetooth.. could connect to my car.. or even my laptop..

I could send a movie to it via bluetooth from phone and watch it on my dash,…

Or I could connect to my car and send the info to my car dealer about the health of my car…

All kinda neat stuff… It is just strange.. you can watch tv and do all kinda neat stuff on a phone.. but these big bulky things you can only do limited stuff.. also .. you could add a tv tuner or have where we can insert one.. or turn it into a xm radio.. or connect a car dvd or psp…

    my quirky ideas,,

    peace,,,

You have got to add a expansion slot on it before you release it… you would be foolish not to,… you would make some serious money with that…

You can have a expansion card that you can use turn it into a police scanner…

or a expansion card that allow you to connect your ipod…via bluetooth… or connect your car… a expansion card that lets you insert any size sim card.. or even insert my tmobile sim card and upload my address book and use the phone numbers and map address to them… and create the safest fastes route to them…safe the most gas..

also… an expansion card that allow me to track where all the gas stations are and track their gas prices… at all time I know which gas station has the cheapest gas,.,

more crazy stuff for the dash I would buy…

    peace…

  5. Jerome Collins Says:

Also.. will my dash have a web based control panel.. that i can access via the internet… and delete and add stuff to my dash in real time…

Can I download route information and extimate how much gas I have used, Also, I can I seperate route information.. Say personal from business.. Say, I went in a business trip… then came home.. now I am on my personal time.. will we be able to see the difference… I guess I need a manual… LOL…

I would like to input my schedual matinance fro my car… at what miles I rotated my car tires and at what miles I changed my oil and at what miles I did a tune up. The I can print it out… I want to be able to store stuff for later retrieval…

I have thousands of ideas,… I want my dash to do… now I need to buy one…

    would love to test one…

    Jerome,

It is GREAT to see someone really enthusiastic about the product! We don’t comment about our product roadmap, but you should know that a number of the features you mentioned are under development and/or under consideration. Thanks for the great thoughts!

    Hi Mark,

This great! We have over 800 GPS motorcycle rides at http://www.SundayMorningRides.com in a variety of formats: GPX, GeoRSS, KML, etc. We’d love to explore ways to have our data loaded into your units. Afterall, the best motorcycling roads are also the best driving roads!

How about actionable restaurant services such as searching for restaurants based upon niche criteria, making reservations, inviting friends, etc. Here’s the catch: to be a valuable service, there needs to be a vast database of enrolled restaurants, in every town, not just in major cities. With
2700+ restaurants enrolled in the first 9 months, my company is working on that.

Interested in access to the API to highlight user maps to the Dash. My site already offers KML feeds for the maps, so curious how easy this will be to add to Dash content. - Brad
