Use Dash and you won’t pay $4.09 per Gallon Gas in San Francisco!
I had a number of meetings up in San Francisco yesterday, and on my drive in I was shocked to see a gas station selling regular grade gas for $4.09 per gallon. A colleague of mine pulled out her phone and took the following picture

With all the talk of $4 per gallon gas I wasn’t shocked that we had gotten to this price point, but I felt like most other stations in the Bay Area were still pretty far away from the $4 price. So I did a search on my dash device to check out other prices nearby. I found that there were *many* other cheaper stations nearby. When I got back to the office I pulled a screen shot to show you what Dash told me:

Note that the distance to each station is far because I captured the search when I got back to the office. Anyway, notice that there is a station less than a mile away that is only $3.73 a gallon… $0.36 cents cheaper per gallon. Yes, our live gas price feature can help you save money!

In terms of live gas prices - how quickly are they updated? What method is used to retrieve the prices?
March 20th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
We get our gas price data from our partner Opisnet. They get gas price data based on credit card transaction data, which gives us very broad coverage as well as very accurate data. We update this data 4 times a day, since prices can change frequently.

This just gets better and better. I had been looking at Platial and trying to see if they or another site had gas price information. I’m really glad this is included in the dash, and can’t wait for that package on my doorstep.
The power splitter was a nice touch, and I appreciated getting it, though for half a minute I hoped desperately that the dash was inside that bubble wrap

Huh, didn’t get mine. Huh, I guess I didn’t order early enough to qualify. No biggie.

No power splitter here, yet, either, and I ordered in December. This gives me a sense of when I can expect the DEx to arrive.

It’s a only $5.00 freebie, so meh. I’ll take the free upgraded shipping.

Thanks for the power splitter guys! It goes to show that you provide great customer support and good things come to those who wait.
These blog updates really do your anxious early adopters a great service! I already know it will be but hopefully those who freaked out and did something rash will soon see it was worth the wait and learn from their mistakes!

Hello - Czn we have a clarification on the shipping? The letter sent with the splitter (thanks by the way - nice touch) indicates that you will the device will be in our hands on the 27th which would be impossible if that is the day you shipped it. Normaly I wouldn’t say anything, but I’ve seen others trying to figure out the same thing.

@dashless… Are you going to change your moniker when you receive the Dash? You won’t be “dashless,” anymore.

With all these connectivity features, I wonder how fast the dash express respond to search and traffic information downloading from the slow slow cell network. Does the Dash use standard GPRS or the faster version, EDGE? Considering GPRS is slower than EDGE… which I had already experienced from accessing google maps from the iPhone, an EDGE device, I like to know how snappy the Dash will be on the road where drivers may have to wait for the device to respond from searching online database on the go. Conditions like searching for a fastfood place while you already drove pass by one long before the device show you there was one.

@robB - I was trying to think of a new name for myself. Here are a few I’m thinking of:
dashfull
dash-more
got mine
& dashdrivin
I wonder if dash driving will become a catch phrase for those easily able to avoid traffic and parse information via internet accesible gps’.

Splitter received today on the east coast - thanks again!
March 24th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
@Howard - our data rates over the cellular network are more than fast enough for the applications we are running. The majority of our searches take less than 3 seconds to complete… so this really shouldn’t be an issue for you or any other Dash user.

Thank you Mark, I’ve preordered the Dash as well and I look forward to try it out when it arrives, hopefully this week…

This is really beginning to stress me out!
First I get this package with the splitter in it.
Then I find out that the Dash is going to be shipped on Wednesday for Thursday delivery, just in time for me to use it while I am on the road for 3 weeks starting on Friday.
Now I have no choice but to take tomorrow off tomorrow so I can sit on my front porch and wait for my Dash!
If I knew who was the carrier I could go to the airport tonight and wait for the plane to come in and beg the distribution site to let me have it early!
March 26th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Yay! I just got the email that my dash has shipped! I hope it gets here tomorrow!!! Here is to driving around aimlessly over the weekend!
March 26th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
@MikeT. Take tomorrow off? Beg the distribution site? You and the rest of us, I’m sure.
March 28th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Ack! I missed the UPS truck this morning… I’ll have to wait til 7:30pm to pick it up at the local ups delivery center. I hope everyone is enjoying theirs.

Will Diesel prices be available?
April 4th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
@Dave - we show Diesel prices for the stations we get the data for, but there are not nearly as many stations that we have diesel data for.

Interesting. Over in the south we are paying $4.25 for regular unleaded. The cost of diseal fuel is just another .50 to .75 cents. If gas prices continue to rise which they will, people will have to make changes in their daily routine. No more extra trips to the mall or grocery store. Heck, I even stop going to the gym after work because it’s not on my way back home. I recently read bicycle stores are seeing and influx of sales along with scooters, and car-pooling. Lifestyles are changing because of this. I wonder how far it will go.
