Dash API Enhancements

Posted by Dash Navigation on July, 11 in Dash Express, Developer

After a lot of great feedback from the community and our developers we’ve just updated our Dynamic Search API for DashApps (PDF). Today we introduce several enhancements including a larger result sets, various user experience improvements, Search Along Route ability, and custom icons. But that’s not all…

The most exciting improvement may be facilitating in-car text entry. This takes advantage of the Dash Express two-way connectivity and really opens the door for a variety of useful application. For example, DashApps could be used to check flight status, find tough to locate electronics, and update social network statuses all from the comfort (and convenience) of your ride. And two of our top customer developers (Mike Tuckman and Michael Muni) are already creating them…!

Now for some stats: Since the introduction of our APIs less than two months ago we have seen developers create over 40 DashApps. The top DashApps see a whopping 20-30% install rate from our customer base - and we enjoy hearing how much they love them!

We’ve also rolled out an updated Firefox Send2Car plugin today that’s compatible with v3. Because Mozilla rocks.

Any plans to port the DashNav software to the iPhone ?

Given the iPhone does not offer great turn-by-turn direction based on live/peer-2-peer traffic data, I think Dash has a great opportunity here.

For us folks over 40, the display size is too small. I’d love to see a larger screen.

I love the idea of the Dash (especially with new Trapster integration!) but the lack of input for a backup camera is really limiting, and the lack of avoidance settings (I love the ability to avoid freeways for instance).
The final thing putting me off the Dash at the moment is the lack of speed input - you say it’s not reliable enough but using Windows Live Search on my mobile phone has pretty much a 90%+ success rate for me looking place/business names up.
The peer-to-peer traffic data seems like an awesome thing

I meant speech input (sorry for the typo)
The other thing I’d love to see the Dash Express support is ODB/CAN monitoring - so things like MPG can be displayed and engine data can be logged (and uploaded)
I guess the theme of my wish list is for the Dash to support a couple of inputs (backup camera and ODB-II) but maybe the ability to pair with multiple bluetooth devices would solve the problem (though a bit more expensive for peripherals would make extensibility easier)
